In UK, BBC may not now win the rights to the 2014 Winter Olympics the 2016 Summer Games after the International Olympic Committee turned down the European Broadcasting Union's usually successful bid on behalf of 75 public service broadcasters as too low.

DirecTV-backed professional videogaming league Championship Gaming Series (CGS) is closing down. Launched in January 2007, CGS started with six franchises in the U.S. (in cities like LA, NY and Dallas), and expanded to international coverage this year.

HarperCollins has been aggressively building up its social media offerings lately, but the News Corp (NYSE: NWS) publisher is going a little slower than some had expected when it comes to rolling out book recommendations site Book Army. The site, which is in private beta, will be up sometime next year, though a date hasn't been specified.

—Library users can download Starz movies for free : OverDrive has brokered a content syndication deal with Starz Media. The Ohio-based service provides public libraries with digital content including video, audiobooks and eBooks, and the deal with Starz adds hundreds of videos—including feature films and TV series—to its 8,000-plus catalog. The content can play on computers or select Windows Media-compatible devices.

Miniweb, a British interactive TV platform spun out of BSkyB (NYSE: BSY), has announced a massive $32 million (£18.35 million) venture round from US investors to take its product offerings international. Funding comes from Meritage Funds in Denver, Colorado and DeGeorge Holdings III, Nevada.
